Elon Musk, the owner of Twitter, has announced that Linda Yaccarino, the current advertising chief at NBCUniversal, will be taking over as the new CEO of the social media platform. While Yaccarino is a veteran media executive, having spent nearly 12 years at NBCUniversal and 20 years running advertising for media conglomerate Turner Broadcasting, relatively little is known about her views on important issues such as the future role of crypto on Twitter. However, Yaccarino’s Twitter presence suggests that she may not be a complete newcomer to the world of cryptocurrency, particularly meme-inspired cryptocurrencies such as Dogecoin and Shiba Inu, which have long attracted Musk’s enthusiasm.
Yaccarino currently follows several Dogecoin- and Shiba Inu-affiliated accounts on Twitter, including the main accounts for both coins, as well as multiple core contributors to the Dogecoin community, such as co-creator Billy Markus and DogeDesigner, the creator of MyDoge, a self-custodial Dogecoin wallet. While Yaccarino has not yet commented publicly on the potential role of Dogecoin and other cryptocurrencies on Twitter under her leadership, her Twitter presence suggests that she shares Musk’s enthusiasm for the coin.
Musk has repeatedly hinted at the integration of crypto payments onto Twitter, particularly with Dogecoin. Last month, Twitter temporarily replaced its blue bird logo with a Doge meme, which sent the coin’s value surging by 20%. While Yaccarino’s positions on numerous crypto-related issues remain unclear, the executive has in the past voiced her support for the site’s efforts, under Musk’s leadership, to embrace open-source coding and digital transparency, which are key tenets of the crypto movement.
During an interview with Musk in front of a Miami audience at Possible, an annual conference for marketers, Yaccarino emphasized the importance of transparency and open-sourcing, stating that “I would say that’s the difference between those other platforms you either don’t use or have never heard of, and [Twitter].” While it remains to be seen how Yaccarino’s appointment as CEO will impact the future of crypto on Twitter, her experience in media and marketing, as well as her apparent interest in Dogecoin, suggest that she may bring a fresh perspective to the social media platform.
